A night out with the basketball team

Today Jen and I watched a basketball game between the teachers at our school and another school in Liyang. It was a really good game.

After the game we were invited to join the players from both teams for dinner at the school's restaurant (located in the same building as our apartment, which is nice for us!). The food as always was plentiful and delicious. There was chicken stomach, beef tripe, shrimp, egg, noodles, duck, pork, several things that I don't know the name for, and lots and lots of BEER! Wow, make sure you are ready to handle some alcohol before dining with the Chinese. They say cheers constantly throughout the meal. Before you take a drink you should stand up and say ganbei (bottoms up!) to someone else at the table. Then you down your drink and fill it back up for the next ganbei. We were dining with two basketball teams, including coaches, principles, and vice principles from both schools. So there were a lot of people! That is a lot of "ganbei"! It was a lot of fun.

Not too much else to report. Monday morning Jen and I made our speech. That went really well. I think everybody understood most of what I said in Chinese. They took pictures so hopefully we can get a copy.

Yesterday I played a game of go against a six year old who beat me hands down. These kids are trained from a very young age and they are amazing. Arrangements are being made for me to get some lessons from the go teacher here at the school.

That's it for now. Later!

Hey Grimes and Jen,

I smelled something funny this morning and I thought of you Jen. I'm sorry. I couldn't resist...especially since you're thousands of km away. Anyways, today was my first day reading your blog. I'm glad everything turned out for you guys. I'm thinking that next time we go to Dim Sum you can do all the ordering instead of Diane. Classes are pretty crazy on this side of the globe. I'm in a Senior Kindergarden class. My Host Teacher doesn't know it yet, but our classes are going from 15 kids today to about 25 kids tomorrow. It should be interesting. I can't believe a 6 year old beat you at GO. You have a lot of catching up to do. By the time that kid is your age he's going to be some kind of super ultimate grand master at GO. If you have the chance you should try to take up some form of martial arts there. It should be an eye opening experience.
Well I'm glad you gays are having fun. Keep posting the pics. They'er great.
Remember, it's polite to fart really loud. The more people that hear the better.

Now that I know you are there I am looking forward to reading more of your blogs. They are very entertaining!

I thought it was really funny how you said when you guys are speaking english people come up to you and listen!! I would have loved to see your faces (esp jenn's face) when that happened the first time.

And Josh making a speech in Chinese, wow that is really impressive. I was in Montreal this weekend and I was the only person who could understand my french. AND I TOOK FRENCH UNTIL GRADE NINE.

The Chinese children really are cute. Now you can understand why so many people here in Canada adopt these little darlings.
I guess children are the same the world over. A substitute teacher is fair game. In time you will learn some tricks of the trade. Clamp down hard. It's easier to let up than start off too soft and then crack down.
Anyway it sounds as if you are doing well. Having good lesson plans is hard work but it will pay off.
Love to you both,
Grandma "C"
